I never noticed before seeing this, but Merle Travis used only his thumb and forefinger. I'd always been taught he used three fingers a la Scruggs banjo picking technique. Now I know.

Doc Watson also plays a two-finger style more or less just like Merle (although every once in a while it seems that third finger creeps in here and there).
